WASHINGTON - NASA has discovered a mysterious hole on Mars. The hole was photographed by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter probe, close to the extinct Arsia Mons volcano. The discovery is hopeful for the future of space travel.
Researchers speak of an important discovery. The hole could be a lava tube that could serve as protection for astronauts during future Mars missions. On Mars, astronauts need shelter from radiation, temperature fluctuations and dust storms. The lava tube could be such a shelter. If the hole is not a lava tube, the researchers believe it will be a cylindrical pit crater. These are formed by volcanic collapses. Similar craters on the moon are thermally stable and have a temperature of around 17 degrees. What kind of hole the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter probe found on Mars remains a mystery for now. To find out the truth, the hole must still be explored during a robot mission.
