The week for the Maritime Anti-Corruption Network Fall Meeting 2024 passed so quickly
The week for the Maritime Anti-Corruption Network Fall Meeting 2024 passed so quickly! A real highlight from this meeting was the announcement that MACN is launching
a Port Integrity Campaign in Malaysia – empowering local industry players to say no to corruption and unethical practices. And it is fantastic to say that there are now 219 companies in the Network!
Again I had the pleasure and honor to attend this conference. Engaging with the industry makes us realize what sort of vulnerable situations companies staff and ship crew
are exposed to when ship come to load or deliver cargo at various places in the world.
After an international flight with lots of foreign nationalities we are acustomed to hear the airpilot announce "The doors may be opened".... put that in perspective....
Would it be an option for ships, to only lower the gangway when the interventions from shore and exchanges with shore are professional, integer and justified they have signed off for.
You need an agent to get your ship in port and depend on pilot/ tugs/ linesman to safely berth the ship.
What can you do? Team up with right partners and create awareness among the company and the shipscrew, what to expect and what not to expect or not to do.
Excessive hospitality gesture for one culture may indicate expectations in return from another culture. Indentify risks and mitigating measures, Flowcharts laying down events in
a possible way and optional next steps to be expected will help to prepare and anticipate. Preparation for High Risk area's and ports is a good way, a better way is frequently excercise
"Preparation for call at High Risk port" Awareness among your company, masters and staff to be prepared, confident and calm to deal respectfull in complex situations and control
damage would unlawfull demands arise from minor flaws in documents, inventory or compliance.
