Today marks the end of my incredibly fruitful visit to Jamaica, where, over the past five days, I had the pleasure of meeting many wonderful people. I’m grateful to Jamaica Boxing Association President and Pan American Boxing Confederation Executive Board member Stephen Jones for the invitation. Witnessing firsthand how boxing can transform, and even save, the lives of young boys and girls has been truly inspiring.
Since 2018, Jamaica has been running the Gloves Over Guns initiative, which engages young people from disadvantaged backgrounds in boxing, offering them an alternative to violence and crime. The program focuses not only on athletic development but also on personal growth, social support, and community empowerment. Many of the boys and girls who have joined this initiative and now train at the boxing gym in Montego Bay shared with me how boxing has genuinely saved their lives, giving them purpose and a path to a better future.
For me, this is a powerful reminder of boxing’s profound social impact - one that the entire global boxing community should recognize and support.
