In ITLOS Case No. 32, the Republic of the Marshall Islands demonstrated what it means to be a strong and committed flag state, standing firmly behind its vessels and seafarers.
I had the honour of attending the judgment at the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) in Hamburg.

The VLCC MT Heroic Idun case highlighted the true value of Marshall Islands registration: active flag state support, international legal protection under UNCLOS, and a clear commitment to the fair treatment and protection of seafarers.
It is encouraging to see that when internationally agreed maritime rules between states are challenged, the legal framework provided by UNCLOS and ITLOS can effectively uphold justice and restore accountability.
The Heroic Idun case is a powerful reminder that the rule of law at sea continues to matter for flag states, shipowners, the maritime industry, and above all, for the welfare and protection of seafarers worldwide.
