Good piece from the NOS about the new wind that President Donald Trump is blowing. I quote: '... the Europeans can do little more than issue joint statements stating that they continue to support Ukraine.
It makes a powerless impression. The crystal clear American message that Ukraine can forget about NATO membership is also painful.
Although behind the scenes no one believed that Ukraine would become a NATO member in the short term, it is a promise that the alliance made back in 2008.
In recent years, the alliance kept coming up with new formulations to promise that it was 'irreversible' that the country would 'one day' become a member.
Zelensky never believed the door was really open, he told CNN.
The question that arises is: What are the alliance's promises worth? This puts NATO's credibility at stake. Also that of the CEO.
Rutte was put to shame by Trump yesterday, because the NATO boss has been calling for "not to make the enemy any wiser than he already is" by openly
speculating about possible negotiations and who would do what. But after Trump's phone call with Putin yesterday, the Russian president knows exactly where he stands.
